SLAVERY AND THE FIGHT FOR FREEDOM
EUROPEAN SLAVE TRADING
Most European nations were involved in Atlantic slave trading and contributed to colonial slavery :
- either by organising slave-trading expeditions,
- or by financing expeditions (e.g. Switzerland),
- or by producing goods to be sold on the coast of Africa to finance the purchase of captives or the running of plantations.
Certain countries were particularly heavily involved in organising slave-trading expeditions :
Country Slave-trading Expeditions
Britain 41 %
Portugal 39 %
France 19 %
Netherlands 5,7 %
Denmark 1,2 %
Liverpool, Europe’s most active slave-trading port, launched 4,894 expeditions, more than all the French ports together.
