Visitors can discover this history at the Ch\u00e2teau des ducs de Bretagne &#8211; Mus\u00e9e d\u2019histoire de Nantes, the Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery, and by following the itinerary entitled \u201cNantes et la traite n\u00e9gri\u00e8re\u201d (\u201cNantes and the slave trade\u201d). The city also supports Nantes-based associations, schools, and performing artistic companies that explore this theme throughout the year. This need to share and recognize different histories hopes to meet the challenge of building a more cohesive society through civic education. For, as we all know, the lessons of the past determine our choices and commitments to the present and to the future.<\/p>\n<h2>A look back at 40 years of commemorative policies<\/h2>\n<p>Since the 1980s, the once-taboo subject of the Atlantic slave trade has slowly been brought to light. Historians and associations were the first to work towards (re)exploring this chapter of our past.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1985<\/strong><br \/>\nOrganization of an international symposium on human trafficking in Nantes; a research program and cultural agenda were planned in concert with the symposium, but the municipality did not wish to finance it.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-42 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/memorial.nantes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/nantes1985_perron.jpg\" alt=\"Tricentenaire du Code noir, Esclavage et m\u00e9moire nantaise, Le triangle d'\u00e9b\u00e8ne, Nantes oct. nov. 1985\" width=\"620\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/memorial.nantes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/nantes1985_perron.jpg 620w, https:\/\/memorial.nantes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/nantes1985_perron-233x300.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/>\n<p><strong>1992<\/strong><br \/>\nFrance\u2019s first temporary exhibition on the trans-Atlantic slave trade and slavery, \u201cLes Anneaux de la M\u00e9moire\u201d took place in Nantes; this exhibition lasted over a year, was a success, and gave the public tools to learn about the trans-Atlantic slave trade and Nantes\u2019 role in it.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Vid\u00e9o ina.fr: Les Anneaux de la m\u00e9moire\" src=\"https:\/\/fresques.ina.fr\/auran-nantes\/export\/player\/Auran000105\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>April 1998<\/strong><br \/>\nCreation of a collective federating eleven Nantes-based associations to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. On April 24, 1998, at the association M\u00e9moire de l\u2019Outre-mer (\u201cOverseas Memory\u201d) commissioned a commemorative sculpture that was unveiled on Quai de la Fosse. Inauguration of an itinerary through the city, with 14 information panels on the slave trade, entitled \u201cNantes and the Slave Trade\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2016<\/strong><br \/>\nPolicy of naming streets after historical figures who fought against slavery. In doing so, a constant form of vigilance against attacks on human dignity is established.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018<\/strong><br \/>\nFirst season of \u201cExpression(s) \u00e0 d\u00e9coloniale(s)\u201d at the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019histoire de Nantes, offering a way to \u201cdecolonize our discourse, perception and imagination\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2019<\/strong><br \/>\nA study was conducted with roughly thirty municipal partners (associations, institutions, elected officials) on Nantes\u2019 memorial policies regarding the history of the slave trade and slavery. The conclusions enabled us to re-establish the general framework for Nantes\u2019 memorial policy, and formalize new collective projects throughout the region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2019<\/strong><br \/>\nNantes becomes a founding member of the Fondation pour la M\u00e9moire de l\u2019esclavage (\u201cFoundation for the Memory of Slavery\u201d).<\/p>\n<p><strong>2021<\/strong><br \/>\nThe temporary exhibition \u201cL\u2019ab\u00eeme, Nantes dans la traite atlantique et l\u2019esclavage colonial, 1707-1830\u201d (\u201cThe Abyss: Nantes in the Atlantic slave trade and colonial slavery\u201d) opens at the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Histoire de Nantes. 30 years after the \u201cAnneaux de la m\u00e9moire\u201d exhibition, the museum offers a new perspective on several themes, including the illegal French slave trade, the Haitian revolution, and the enslavement of men, women and children on French soil in the 18th and 19th centuries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2022<\/strong><br \/>\n10th anniversary of the Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery and a growing federation of active figures on the subject in Nantes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/memorial.nantes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/10ans_memorial_esclavage.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Discover the 10th anniversary document of the Nantes Slavery Abolition Memorial.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2023<\/strong><br \/>\nInformation signs added to streets named after historical figures that took part in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"m_link_box shadow\" href=\"https:\/\/memorial.nantes.fr\/en\/the-memorial-in-the-city\/may-10#contenu\">Continue reading:<br \/>\n<strong>May 10<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As France\u2019s leading slave-trading port in the 18th and 19th centuries, Nantes is now known throughout the world for its efforts to examine its historical relationship to the slave trade and slavery.
