{"id":371,"date":"2017-12-18T11:51:24","date_gmt":"2017-12-18T10:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/memorial.nantes.fr\/?page_id=371"},"modified":"2023-12-11T10:39:30","modified_gmt":"2023-12-11T09:39:30","slug":"the-memorial-in-the-city","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/memorial.nantes.fr\/en\/the-memorial-in-the-city\/","title":{"rendered":"The memorial in the city"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>An Urban Itinerary<\/h2>\n<p>While the Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery contributes to remembrance and the public record of memory in the city, the Nantes History Museum, located in the Ch\u00e2teau des Ducs de Bretagne, provides the keys to understanding the city\u2019s slave-trading history, extensively presented in the permanent exhibit.<br \/>\nBoth locations are connected through a walk in the streets of Nantes marked out by eleven information boards on the slave trade, with the title \u201cNantes and the slave trade\u201d.<br \/>\nLocated in iconic locations in the city that include the Quai de la Fosse and the \u00cele Feydeau, the different panels present the slave trade system, how it developed in Nantes and its consequences for the city, both in terms of economy and development.<br \/>\nThe walk stretches over 1.5 kilometers and takes about one hour.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/memorial.nantes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Panneaux_parcours_dans_la_ville.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">possibility of downloading PDF versions of the information boards<\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"van_map_frame\" src=\"http:\/\/memorial.nantes.fr\/wp-content\/themes\/memorial_2017\/map\/MEMORIAL_MAP.php?l=fr\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>The Nantes History Museum<\/h2>\n<p>The slave trade and slavery are part of the city\u2019s history and identity. From the 17th century to the 19th century, the slave trade dominated Nantes\u2019 commercial activities and contributed to the city\u2019s accumulation of wealth.<br \/>\nThe collections and the historical research carried out on the slave trade by the Nantes History Museum are recognized around the world.<br \/>\nWhile exploring the museum\u2019s 12 rooms, visitors can learn about Nantes\u2019 role in slave-trading Europe and how a slave trade campaign was organized, the identities of local ship owners and traders, how slaves were sold, and their lives on the plantations.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chateaunantes.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.chateaunantes.fr<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Local Players<br \/>\nNantes Facing its Past: The Role of Associations and Civil Society<\/h2>\n<p>Beginning in the 1980s, the city\u2019s long-hidden slave-trading past gradually began to come to light. Historians whose work addressed this little-known subject were at the forefront of this change. In 1985, at their initiative, an international colloquium on the slave trade was organized in Nantes. The exhibit lasted just over a year and helped the public to understand the slave trade and the role played by Nantes.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fresques.ina.fr\/auran\/export\/player\/Auran000105\/wide\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In 1998, a Nantes collective was created that united eleven associations to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the abolition. On April 24, 1998, an initiative by the association M\u00e9moire de l\u2019Outre Mer culminated in a unveiling of a commemorative sculpture at the Quai de la Fosse. It opened to the public in 2012, marking a new stage in the development of the knowledge and recognition of Nantes\u2019 slave-trading past.<\/p>\n<p>The associations in Nantes are currently continuing to promote historical awareness and remembrance of the slave trade, slavery and abolition. They host activities, visits and meetings at various locations in the city throughout the year. Their participation in the May 10 commemoration and numerous events such as Human Rights Day (December 10) show their dedication to freedom and human rights.<\/p>\n<h2>Principal local associations
